What is the youngest age a horse can be marked? It is advisable not to mark under 12 months of age, we usually recommend between 12/18 months old depending on what height the horse will mature at. How do you mark light coloured horses? On light coloured horses, we hold the super-chilled markers on for longer to kill the hair follicle which will result in no hair growth.We call this type of mark a bald mark. We will only bald mark on the shoulder. Can horses be ridden after they have been freezemarked? Only a small lay off is required. For saddle marks we suggest returning to work after 4-7 days, 2-3 days when marked on the shoulder. Should numnahs be used after the horse has been marked? Yes. It is essential to use a numnah or saddle cloth until the white hair has grown through. We recommend using cotton or thick woollen numnahs. Is freezemarking painful? It is a humane way of marking a horse permanently to deter theft. Super-chilled markers are placed onto the horses skin. This destroys the hair pigment (i.e. chestnut, bay etc.), so that the hair regrows white, and the unique four digit mark can be seen.We regulary mark horses for the RSPCA, ILPH and the police. What happens when the coat grows in winter? In some circumstances especially with bald marks or long coated horses it will be necessary to clip the mark to ensure good visibility.
